Biography
Michael Sandler a certified global nurse consultant with a specialty in systems level policy implementation. He is currently PhD student in the UBCO school of Nursing, faculty of Health and Social Development completing his doctorate in nursing with a focus on system level enables and barriers to implementing healthcare program and service delivery in a rural and remote context. An adjunct professor at both UBC and UNBC schools of nursing he is also an ISU scholar for the UBC Department of Medicine. Michael previously helped the High Acuity Response Team (HART), a rural critical care outreach team of nurses and allied healthcare practitioners, achieve recognition as a “Promising Practice” by the Health Council of Canada, using the Health Innovation Portal Evaluation Framework. He was the recipient of the CNA’s “150 Nurses for Canada” a peer nominated award that recognized Canada’s most influential nurse leaders for his leadership and willingness to advocate for change. Michael is passionate about promoting team-based care approaches in support of transforming rural and remote care delivery and expanding scope of practice for nurses to align accountability and responsibility for care received by their patients. More recently, he led the provincial nursing association and served as co-chair of the Rural Health Providers Advisory Group in conjunction with the RCCBC, and co-chair of the Team-Based Care Subcommittee for Team Development along with the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council. Finally, Michael was most recently a member of PSBC Perinatal services steering committee as well as a member of the RCCBC dean’s advisory council, the Government of BC – Ministry of Health Team based care steering committee and an advisor to the UBC Deans health system advisory council. Michael has just undertaken an advisory role with Dicerra Safety systems, collaborating in the role of Chief Nursing Officer, with both government and linked sectors and he will be starting as the newest member of the UBC Senate on April 1st, 2023.
